Chapter 4
"Hi, you've
reached..." said a monotonous voice.
"Jesse."
"And Ryan."
"And Mickey."
"And James."
"And Adam."
"Please leave a message," the five voices said in unison.
"Hey guys, it's me. Well, I found a way out. I'm on a boat out of New
York Harbor, a really nice one. I met a really nice girl, she's helping
me out. Got some snacks and we're going to go fish for dinner. She's
apparently an awesome cook, but we'll see. If you need to reach me, my
phone's on, otherwise I'll call you at 10. Peace!"
No one answered.
"Jesse!"
"Ryan? What's up," he asked.
"We have a call," he yelled over the propeller. "The phone's vibrating."
"Don't bother, you'll never hear them," Jesse shouted.
"What if it's Adam?"
"You know Adam, I'm sure he's fine."
"I guess so."
Ella grabbed the speaker for the radio.
"Coast guard, coast guard, this is Captain Ella. Do you copy?"
"Yes, Captain, what can we do for you?"
"What's the MARSAC level at?"
"Level one, will you be leaving the harbor today?"
"Yes, sir."
"Give me your digits."
" The Princess, ID NJ 375 8306, 2001 90' Hatteras Carolina registered to
New York, New York, over."
"Thank you cap'n. Permission to enter."
"Thank you, have a good day."
" You too, m'am."
Ella grabbed the throttle, pushed it forward, and they were off.
Pushing the intercom, Ella said, "Yo, Adam. There's a spectacular view
out here. Come on up the ladder."
About five minutes later, Adam appeared.
"Hey, what were you saying...wow." Adam looked up at Ella to see the
entire New York Skyline. The city was completely dark.
"Yeah," she smiled from the wheel as they left under the Verrazano
Bridge.
"When did you learn to drive?" he asked as the boat began to hit some
small waves, which the boat took care of with ease.
"Well, my Dad and I went fishing all the time, my brother too. I learned
how to drive, took my coast guard exam, and poof! I could drive."
"How old were you?" he inquired.
"Thirteen," she grinned.
"Before you could drive a car?"
"Well, there are no thirteen year olds driving cars in New Jersey, at
least I hope not. So, tell me some stuff about yourself, Adam. I mean, I
just don't really know anything about you..."
"There's not much to know about me...um, I'm going to sit on the deck,"
he stuttered as he tried to climb down.
"Adam, wait. Come on, please stay, it gets lonely up here."
"Ella..."
"Please..."
"Fine," he pouted and sat in the chair.
After about an hour of silence, Ella began to speak.
"Adam, I didn't mean to offend you or anything. We're almost there, so
if you want to hang out down there, I'll understand."
"Okay, thanks," he answered casually as he headed down the ladder. |
