Chapter 9

Ella drove the boat to the cove and anchored up in silence. Adam was completely stunned by her behavior towards that man, her friend. Was this how she treated her friends? He needed to re-assess their relationship.

"Of all people to see, why him, why him, why him?" she whispered at the wheel as she wiped away her tears. "Damn you, Shane Morrison."

"Crap," Adam sighed as he clutched his stomach.
Well, he had gotten through the morning and afternoon, why not wait until now?
Staggering a little bit, he moved towards the side, and leaned against it heavily. God, why didn't this end. He had just had a great night's sleep! 10 hours! He never got 10 hours!
Suddenly, his stomach lurched, emptied, and calmed. All in a span of a minute and after he drank a glass of water, he actually felt a little better.

Ella climbed back down to the deck in a complete silence once again, only to come face to face with an obviously confused and perturbed Adam Levine.
"Why the hell were you so rude to Shane?"
"I don't need to explain myself to you."
"He's a friend, why were you so cold?" he asked angrily.
"Some friend he is, I don't need a friend like Shane Morrison. Ever," she answered.
"Ella, what is wrong with you? He was just being kind."
"Don't you see, Adam? Shane acts kind to pry into your world and once he does, he gets more and more control over you until you don't know who you are anymore. That's what Shane does, Adam."
"Oh please, you are overexaggerating once again, Ella. For God's sake, be civil here."
"Be civil? With the way he acts?" she yelled.
"A friend being interested in how you are and being kind isn't unusual, Elle."
"You don't know..." she began.
"You don't know the meaning of unusual, Adam. I know! What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"This," she fired back and kissed him hard on his lips.
Adam raised his eyebrows over closed eyes in shock and after a few moments, Adam and Ella relaxed.
Ella finally broke the kiss and retreated to her bedroom, leaving a stunned Adam Levine behind on the dock, just standing there.
"What just happened?" he asked himself aloud.
"Did something just happen I'm going to regret?"
Adam picked up the vibrating phone, only to hear a voice message from Jesse.
"Hey, Adam. Well, we're going to hang here for a little bit. We found a really nice hotel with AC, but we don't advise you meet us here just yet. Give it a few days and we'll be in Jersey. You can meet us there. Tell Ella we say hello and thanks for putting up with you or if you are listening to this then, yeah, um, thanks. It takes a real trooper to put up with Prince Levine here. Thanks again, bye. Almost forgot, I can't wait to meet you, Ella, and see you both.  Hope all is well with you two."
And if Adam was really talking to Jesse now, he didn't know how to answer that. He couldn't even answer it for himself.

She locked the door behind her and fell back against it and just stood there for a while, in a confused state.
"It can't be possible, it just can't."
She could have sworn she had tasted blood. Adam's blood.
