Prologue

"Why are you always writing in that God-forsaken thing?"
"Hmm?" Ella peered up at the man standing above her, exhaustion slowly evaporating from her vision.
"The diary...journal...whatever you want to call it...what's the point?"
"Adam, Adam, Adam..." she shook her head at him. Yes, she loved him to pieces, but sometimes, he failed to understand that certain things in life were just simple things and didn't need a reason to occur. She also knew that he wouldn't stop badgering her so she needed to give him a satisfying answer. "If you and the guys can have a Tour Diary on your message board, why can't I keep a diary?"
"Because you're 24..."
"And," her voice sharply cut through his, like a blade through ice in the winter, "Because I'm not a rock star, right?"
"You know I didn't mean it that way, Elles..."
"It's really okay if you did. It's my job to deflate that ego of yours," she jabbed him playfully in the stomach.
"And you do such a good job," he laughed weakly, sleep still on his mind, and scooted next to her on the bench of the bus. "SO...what are you writing in there?"
She snapped the diary on his finger, "Nothing you need to read," she laughed and hit it under the cushion, "Read it and die."
"Is that a threat..."
"Maybe..." she trailed off, her mind wandering further than the conversation at hand.
"Ella? Are you okay?" Adam's concerned voice pierced her thoughts.
"I'm okay...just a little overwhelmed."
"Well, after tonight...we'll be back near Los Feliz and we can work on the house for a couple of days before we completely hit the road. It's not going to be so bad...I mean, you get to spend time with me...how much better can it get?" he chuckled and nudged her a few times in the ribs.
"I don't know, but it might involve a nice book and some quiet time."
"It's four in the morning, how much more quiet time do you want?"
"I'm not sure, Adam," she shrugged off the comment and look deep into his eyes. He had been deprived of sleep lately, and it wasn't because she had arrived. The tour tended not to allow a lot of sleep and Adam's everyday attitudes began to show it. He had certainly perked up when they first arrived, but once he got back to his routine, the facade quickly disappeared faster than a speeding bullet. She missed being able to wake up at noon, just knowing that it was his arms around her and no one else. For a while, though, this would just have to do.
His hazel eyes emanated exhaustion and his smile weakened with each day. He needed a break and she wasn't going to keep him from it.
"Adam, lay down...I'm going to read a book, maybe it'll give you the quite time you need," Ella touched the side of his cheek, her voice plagued with worry. "You do need some sleep, Adam, you're not yourself...and you're scaring me. I never want anything to ever happen to you again. Just lie down."
Adam simply smiled at her...and that was all she needed. That small reassurance that it'd all be okay...only she knew that he couldn't promise it, but that he'd try as hard as he could to make sure of it.
Just as a cerulean light began streaking across the sky, Adam Levine laid his head down on his girlfriend's lap and peacefully drifted off into a much needed sleep, leaving her to revel in her deepest thoughts. Something she hadn't done in a very long time.
